How To Load a Motorcycle on a Truck

Man Standing Near Harley with Helmet Off Looking into Valley

Sometimes, you want to bring your motorcycle along with you on a vacation, requiring you to load your motorcycle onto a truck. Do you know how to load a motorcycle on a truck, though? By following our handy guide on how to tie down a motorcycle, you can avoid an expensive accident when bringing your motorcycle from Portland to the lake or campsite.

Trailer Recommendations

Tying down your motorcycle is a process that takes some special equipment. If you don’t already have one, we recommend you get your hands on a dedicated motorcycle trailer for your pickup truck. The reason we recommend a dedicated motorcycle trailer when learning how to load a motorcycle on a truck, is due to the extra height needed to get your bike into your truck’s trailer bed. You’ll need a far longer ramp to get to reach your bed, and that additional height also adds additional risk of a costly spill. Save yourself the hassle and potential cost by looking for a motorcycle trailer that’s low to the ground.

Ramp Recommendations

When it comes to ramps, we suggest an arched ramp rather than one that has a single angle. An arched ramp combines multiple grades into a single ramp to ease the final angle separating the ramp from the trailer. A soft grade between the ramp and the trailer is not only easier for loading, it reduces the risk of damage to your bike from the breakover angle.

How To Tie Down a Motorcycle: Step By Step

  1. Get all the equipment you need, including the ramp and trailer
  2. Back your truck up to a hill or ditch if you have the ability to
  3. Take the tailgate off to prevent personal injury and damage to your property
  4. If you’re doing this as a solo job, get a ramp that’s wide enough to walk up or use a step to climb up into the bed
  5. If you have help, you can team up to move and position the bike
  6. Using strong ties, secure the motorcycle
  7. As you’re driving from Gresham to your weekend destination, be sure to check your work at stops and be sure your bike is still secure
