How to Get a Motorcycle License in Oregon

Motorcycle Training Course

If you’re wondering how to get a motorcycle license in Oregon so that you can finally ride a new LiveWire® on the streets of Vancouver, then you’ve come to the right place. The team here at Latus Motors Harley-Davidson is here to help answer all your FAQs about motorcycle licenses, from whether you need one, to what they cost.

But, let’s get the first misconception out of the way. In the state of Oregon, rather than being called a Motorcycle License, it’s called a Motorcycle Endorsement. For the sake of clarity, we’ll be calling it a license for the rest of this FAQ, but don’t be surprised if that’s what you see at the DMV.

Do You Need a Motorcycle License?

Do you need a motorcycle license in Oregon? It depends on the bike. In the state of Oregon, there are two cutoffs that determine whether or not you need a Motorcycle License. If your “bike”:

  • Goes over 30 mph on level ground
  • Is over 50cc

If that’s the case, then according to Oregon state law you must drive with a motorcycle license. Otherwise, you’ll be making a Class A traffic violation. If you need more information on a specific motorcycle, moped, or other vehicle’s license requirements check out the Motorcycle & Moped Manual for Oregon.

What are the Motorcycle License Requirements?

So then, what are the motorcycle license requirements? Well, that depends. Are you trying to get a permit? Or are you trying to get the full license? Their requirements are as follows:

For a Motorcycle Permit you need:

  • To be 16 or older
  • A valid Oregon Driver License

  • A separate motorcyclist who is at least 21 years old, who has a valid motorcycle endorsement, and who will supervise you when you ride
  • To only operate during daylight hours
  • To never have passengers
  • To pay the permit fee

For a full Motorcycle License you need:

  • To pass one of the rider education courses provided by TEAM OREGON and receive a TEAM OREGON completion card (Unless you already have a valid out-of-state motorcycle license or endorsement. Then you are not required to take the TEAM OREGON course.)
  • To be 16 or older
  • To have a valid driver license from Oregon
  • Proof of your residence address and legal presence/identity
  • The ability to pass the motorcycle knowledge test (Unless you already have a valid out-of-state motorcycle license or endorsement. Then you are not required to take the knowledge test.)
  • The ability to pass a vision test
  • To pay the endorsement fee
